Our core programs

Essential needs
By providing consistent access to hot showers, clean laundry, and nutritious food, we restore mental bandwidth. This allows individuals to move beyond "survival mode" and unlock their ability to plan for the future.
Administrative support
We help neighbors regain their legal identity by assisting with obtaining State IDs, Social Security cards, and birth certificates, transforming "invisible" individuals into recognized citizens.
White flag shelter
Beyond saving lives in extreme weather, our emergency shelter provides crucial crisis stabilization and a "soft entry point" to connect individuals with long-term housing and recovery programs.

Ginny's breakthrough story
For 8 years, addiction had me completely lost. I know what it feels like to be overlooked, underserved, homeless, struggling, and just trying to survive another day while feeling invisible to the world. Today, by the grace of God, I am almost 16 months sober, a certified APSS, and now work for Breakthrough Base — giving back what was so freely given to me. What I love most about Breakthrough is that we meet people where they are at. No judgment. No looking down on people because of their circumstances. Just compassion, resources, support, and reminding people they still matter. The homeless, the struggling, the addicted, the underserved… they are human beings deserving of love, dignity, and someone willing to see them beyond their situation. I’m forever grateful I now get to be part of that work every single day.
Our unique approach
Our "secret sauce" is the removal of the "invisible barrier" to exiting homelessness. We solve the "catch-22" of not being able to get a job without an ID, by funding and navigating the process for vital documentation. We champion dignity as a strategy, understanding that a hot shower is a clinical intervention that builds trust for the "heavy lifting" of case management. As a centralized "resource hub" in Muhlenberg County, we connect neighbors to vital services while offering radical accessibility and flexibility without the typical red tape. Other places help people survive homelessness; Breakthrough Base helps people exit it.
